Description of Goods and Services - How?

When registering a trademark, you will have to provide a "Description of Goods and Services" in connection with each class. This is basically a list of the goods or services on which you intend to apply your trademark.

There are lots of standard descriptions provided by the registration offices, but many trademarks have their own description.

Checklist::

  • Check what descriptions your competitors or other similar companies are using.
  • Search through the standard descriptions provided by the registration offices.
  • If you decide to use your own description two things occur:
    1. There is a risk that you may have to change the description if it wasn't allowed. This doesn't affect your application in any other way than it might slow it down.
    2. Using your own description when applying to the USPTO will cost another 50 dollars
